Petron fan club apologizes for racist chants on Marqus Blakely

The head of one fan club for the Petron Blaze Boosters apologized for a racial slur chanted by some of his group’s members at San Mig Coffee import Marqus Blakely during Game Five of the PLDT Telpad Governors’ Cup finals.

Anmessage from Blazing Beermen Clan fan club founder Ryan Ponce was posted on the group’s Facebook account on Monday admitting the incident and apologizing for the behavior of some of its members.

“Although it didn’t really start from the Blazing Beermen Clan and originated from another Petron fan group, some of our members were found guilty of chanting,” Ponce said.

“And I would like to apologize and to make amends to the fans of Mr. Blakely, the san mig coffee fans, the petron management and players, and the whole PBA organization for the misconduct of some of my members.”

Ponce added that he couldn’t speak for the other Petron fans who were not members of his group.

During the second quarter of Game Five, some Petron fans chanted “Monkey! Monkey! Monkey!” at Blakely while the tournament’s Best Import was at the free throw line.

San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone admitted he didn’t understand what the fans were chanting in the heat of the game, but called the slurs “discouraging.”

Ponce said that his group will take action against members who participated in the racist chanting.

“Rest assured that proper sanctions will be given within our group’s policies,” he added.
