Justin Melton's blindfolded slam dunk fail goes viral (VIDEO)
Just like that, the failed slam attempt of Justin Melton at the PBA All-Star Slam Dunk contest sent the foreign media abuzz.
Melton, last year's co-champion, tried to pull off a windmill dunk after he was blindfolded by Purefoods teammate Joe Devance.
But when he launched himself to the air and tried to throw down the ball, he missed the attempt by several feet which sent the crowd at the Puerto Princesa City Coliseum roaring with laughter.
The attempt garnered reactions from international media organizations like the USA Today, SB Nation and Bleacher Report and even landed an airtime in CNN.
"Not even close. Not even remotely close. Melton was eliminated with the dunk, and may God have mercy on his soul," said USA Today's Nate Scott.
"The reaction from his team mate, whose shirt he was wearing as a blindfold, preeeetty much says it all," said Michael Katz of SB Nation.
Rey Guevarra of Meralco eventually won the contest after beating Ginebra’s Japeth Aguilar in the final round.
Melton, however, clarified that the dunk was merely “staged” and was meant as a joke.
“We planned it, but we never know it would go this big,” he said in SPIN. “So that’s what I did afterwards. It wasn’t a serious attempt, but it was more of fun and just to get people to enjoy.”
